The clone factories
A handful of houses do most of the copying. Lattafa and Maison Alhambra alone account for close to a hundred quality clones between them — the two names you’ll see attached to more “smells like” comparisons than any others. Ranked by how many designer and niche originals each one convincingly reproduces:
The most-copied houses
On the other side of the ledger, some houses are targets far more than others. Giorgio Armani, Parfums de Marly and YSL top the list — Parfums de Marly is the most striking, since it makes a fraction of the fragrances the big designers do and still gets copied at nearly the same rate. Ranked by quality clones across each house’s full line:
How close do they actually get?
The average quality clone in our database lands around 78% of the original — close enough that most people wouldn’t clock it in casual wear, far enough that a trained nose usually can. The best ones push past 90% and hold the match through the drydown, which is the part that separates a real alternative from a cheap impression that evaporates in an hour.
That spread is why we rank clones instead of just listing them. See the originals the budget houses chase hardest on the most-cloned fragrances, and the closest 1:1 matches on the most accurate cologne dupes.
The money in the gap
The whole reason this market exists is the price gap, and it’s wider than most people expect. On the biggest pairings we track, the clone saves you $300 to $530 a bottle — a $500-plus niche release matched by a $30 copy. Even the “small” savings clear a few hundred dollars.
We ranked the widest dollar gaps on the biggest fragrance savings of 2026 — every clone shown beside the original it copies, with the real prices side by side.
Methodology
Figures are drawn from our fragrance database (6,432 entries as of September 2026). A “quality clone” is a budget-house release that our data links to a designer or niche original at 55% scent similarity or higher, with net-positive community reception — copies of other copies are excluded, as are budget houses cloning each other. House tallies fold naming variants together (Lattafa Perfumes into Lattafa, and so on). Savings compare same-size bottles at current retail. We refresh this report yearly.
